Half-resting, half-on-call

Dear Reader,

Most women I work with know they’re allowed to take a sick day. They’ll tell you so from bed, thermometer in mouth, phone propped on the duvet, answering a “quick question” email with one thumb. Half-resting, half-on-call.

Last week a wicked virus flattened me, and somewhere around day two I gave up and put my phone face-down in another room.

Here’s what I’ve been doing instead:

Reading, napping, and lots of wait, did I already read this page?

Drawing smudgy, strange monsters with these oversized blocks of charcoal I picked up in Rome.

Lying in the hammock under tons of blankets (extra laundry be damned!) and watching the leaves glow.

There’s no right way to do a sick day, of course. You don’t need another thing to get right. But I hope you’ll consider this your permission to give yourself what you need, fully.

Do you have a half-sick-day ritual you’d like to retire? Press reply and tell me. (I promise I’ll answer once I’m out of the hammock.)

With such love,

Brooke

P.S. Thanks to everyone who filled out the reader survey. I’m delighted to share that Silvie won the drawing for a 1:1 session with me!

On retreat, my clients fell for the Dirt Gems Plant Oracle Deck, so I wanted to share these cards with you. Here’s the one I pulled for this community:

A snippet from the Dirt Gems guidebook: “We miss much in our lives by moving too fast. It can be difficult to focus or attune to any one thing with so much vying for our attention. Passionflower calls us to really see what we pass, smell all the amazing scents around us, and watch the other living things in their patterns, signals, and ecological intelligence.”

I'm Brooke Hofsess.

I'm a Midlife Midwife for women who want to start their next chapter from soul, not fear or ego, so they can finally do the work they're meant to do — and actually enjoy it.

You'll find me in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where I live with my husband Dustin, our daughter Thea, two clever border collies, and an ever-growing collection of handmade mugs for Egyptian Licorice Mint tea.

You can read about my journey here.

Dear Reader, Marion Woodman used to say that when we don't look at our dreams, it's like unopened mail. Free advice, delivered every night, stacking up on the nightstand while we open bank statements and athleisure catalogues. This week on The Midlife Ripening Podcast, I sat down with one of my dearest mentors, Sil Reynolds. Sil is a psychotherapist, co-author of Mothering & Daughtering: Keeping Your Bond Strong Through the Teen Years, and a student of Marion Woodman for twenty years. I...

Dear Reader, If you've ever put your own creative life on hold to take care of someone, you know how hard it is to find your way back to it. Last weekend I got to watch my dad find his way back. My daughter, my sister, my niece and I helped him mark off a ten-by-ten square on his basement floor so he could practice setting up his booth for a craft fair that's coming up. He put his woodworking aside for years to take care of my mom, right up until she passed in March. That's what we do when...

Pre P.S. Join me for The Divination Well this Sunday 9/27 at noon ET. Our theme this month is Mirror, Mirror. Dear Reader, I used to feel so scared every time I published this newsletter. I remember wishing I could magically cast a spell so certain people would never, ever see it. It wasn't that I had anything to hide. But I was afraid the me on the page wouldn't match the woman they'd already decided I was. I wonder if this sounds familiar? Not the newsletter exactly, but the spell: the wish...
