You're doing everything "right"

Dear Reader,

The sleepytime tea is steeping. The open journal on your lap. A puzzle in progress.

And yet, you still go to bed feeling... kind of blah.

You don't have to hit a dramatic, collapse-on-the-floor kind of burnout to be soulfully dehydrated. You can be doing everything "right" and still not wake up feeling replenished.

The overculture sells us a one-size-fits-all version of rest (looking at you, 8 hours of perfect sleep). What we actually need to refill our cups… well, that shifts pretty wildly depending on what we are up to.

I believe some seasons of life ask you to move toward the world. Say yes, show up, be seen.

Others ask you to close the door and go quiet. Dive into the darkness of yourself.

Each season is thirsty for a different replenishment.

Try to recover from a venturing-out season with a hunkering-down remedy — or vice versa — and of course you stay parched.

Marie-Louise von Franz offered up dreams as a consistent source of renewal:

“
Each ladle full of the water of life is a dream. That's what a dream is. Every night, we get a sip of the water of life, and, if we understand the dream, we are vivified.

Every single night, you can sip from your limitless well.

An inner wisdom that intimately knows your life, your needs, and adapts itself to you the same way a nursing mother's body adapts to her baby.

The exact medicine you need, exactly when you need it.

I'm so curious… are you in a venturing-out season or a hunkering-down season? How's your rest holding up? Reply and let me know!

See you on Sunday, love.

To your second bite,

Brooke

Dear Reader, If you've ever put your own creative life on hold to take care of someone, you know how hard it is to find your way back to it. Last weekend I got to watch my dad find his way back. My daughter, my sister, my niece and I helped him mark off a ten-by-ten square on his basement floor so he could practice setting up his booth for a craft fair that's coming up. He put his woodworking aside for years to take care of my mom, right up until she passed in March. That's what we do when...

Pre P.S. Join me for The Divination Well this Sunday 9/27 at noon ET. Our theme this month is Mirror, Mirror. Dear Reader, I used to feel so scared every time I published this newsletter. I remember wishing I could magically cast a spell so certain people would never, ever see it. It wasn't that I had anything to hide. But I was afraid the me on the page wouldn't match the woman they'd already decided I was. I wonder if this sounds familiar? Not the newsletter exactly, but the spell: the wish...

Dear Reader, Whether it's delivering keynotes, making a perfect French omelette, or staging furniture in a room — you can be really, really good at things that don't bring you more fully alive. And that's a funny thing about being a woman in midlife, you get good at something, and then the getting-good becomes a trap. When that happens, as Mark Nepo puts it, "we're asked to shed our gown of mastery in order to begin again." Staying alive in your own life means you can't keep hiding behind the...
